Bulgaria: Watch as Roma homes bulldozed around them

Clashes broke out between residents of a Roma neighborhood in Stara Zagora and police as the demolition of Roma homes began on Monday.

Locals resisting the demolition erected barricades in an attempt to save their homes, with some residents reportedly threatening to commit suicide and pursue legal action. Others mounted rooftops and threw stones and tiles at the 1,000 police officers who had been deployed. Dozens were injured and two people were arrested.

Bulldozers knocked down 55 Roma homes in the Lozonets district under the order of Mayor Zhivko Todorov. The demolition is scheduled to continue until Tuesday.
